Setting up Oracle Base Database Service on OCI

Oracle Base Database service is a for pay offering on OCI but it is quite reasonably priced and suitable for setting up test environments. Still the setup is relatively complex and the scope of this article is the out line the main steps used.

Setup the Network

Decide the compartment to be used. In my case it will be called beta.

Under Networking, choose Virtual cloud networks. We will use the wizard as it is a strongly recommended approach. Otherwise, all the network elements listed below will need to be created and setup manually 🤷🏽‍♂️

Start VCN wizard
Choose VCN with Internet Connectivity
Name the new VCN: NWBETA
Configure the VCN and subnets

Review and Create:

Make sure you have a bucket created in the object storage of the compartment

Now we should be ready to create the ‘Base DB System

Start the wizard
In general I keep the defaults for a small test system, I only modified the storage to ‘Balanced’ in order to manage costs
If needed, change the shape so we are within the limits in place
I reuse my keys and give a prefix for the hostname. Click Next
Make sure to use select the desired database image. Deselect the backups service if not needed. Click Create DB System
If all other tenancy conditions are met, we will get a screen like this and provisioning starts. Note: It can take a few hours to complete provisioning.

Remove the Database Service

  1. Navigate to Oracle Database -> Oracle Base Database Service
  2. Select the correct Compartment
  3. Select the DB System
  4. From the right, choose Terminate to delete the whole DB system including the databases:
